Is Magnus Carlsen the reincarnation of Wilhelm Steinitz? Astrological insights into character and mind of world chess champions.

Just as the embodied soul continuously passes from childhood to youth to old age, similarly, at the time of death, the soul passes into another body. The wise are not deluded by this.
- Bhagavad Gita 2.13

Reincarnation is an explanation for the extreme differences of human destinies. There are prodigies whose island talent results precisely from a previous passion for their field. This ability is hardly to be derived psychologically or sociologically. Not only that the reincarnated resemble their predecessors externally - above all they have similar abilities which were "put into the cradle" to them. And they dealt intensively with the life of their previous incarnations.

As the outer body and physical appearance just reflects the inner soul character, usually there is an astonishing similarity to be observed. There are numerous testimonials about reincarnation of average people (among them such incredible stories as the one of a child remembering his murderer by name), but here we present just four striking cases of celebrities which are easy to verify and compare.

The first match was discovered by the author when browsing through his astrological dabatase: Wilhelm Steinitz, the first and fourfold world chess champion (1836-1900) and Magnus Carlsen, the now reigning, also fourfold world chess champion (1990-). To begin with, the physignomical features (nose, ears, forehead, lower lip, cheeks and hairline) are of striking resemblance. But also their characters are matching: Wilhelm Steinitz was physically handicapped by a clubfoot. It is therefore highly probable that he was an outsider as a youngster, often bullied by his peers. Magnus Carlsen is also revealing in his autobiographic documentary "Magnus" (2016) his hard time when being bullied by his school mates which made him cry often.

High interest in excelling

However, this constant pressure and disappointment in early life seems to be the prerequisite for an exceptional will to conquer which is again mandatory to reach the very top in a specific field. As was Steinitz, Carlsen can also be very "edgy". When asked whether Carlsen "is as friendly as he seems" GM Sam Shankland (former second of Carlsen in his first two world championships against Vishwanathan Anand) records: "Magnus is very edgy. He's happy to make fun of you and if he thinks you are an idiot he's not going to be shy to tell you about it. He's is pretty straight forward. I think he is a very decent guy, I get along with him quite well."
- Quoted from a Banter Blitz live recording (22:53, chess24, 27.03.2021)

Both the Mahabote horoscope of Wilhelm Steinitz and the Mahabote horoscope of Magnus Carlsen have Thursday as the corresponding day of the week of their birthday (Thursday corresponds to Jupiter) as well as Mars as the planet of the seven year-cycle. Let's see why Mars in the central house of  "Wealth" is so important:

With Mars in Wealth, this family cherishes action which produces concrete results and products, or builds something which endures, such as an organization or an edifice. The key word here, of course, is action. This is a family of participants rather than observers, a family of doers rather than watchers. They appreciate competition and they comprehend the need for training and practice in order to excel. They are very interested in excelling; they prefer to be first and best. They cannot help but assess, evaluate and compare; and they quite naturally look upon being second or third as outright failure. Members of this family are well connected to their physical bodies and value them very highly. They set a very high value on physical energy and courage, and they are very sensitive to up-and-down swings in their physical energy levels. They may work out many of their emotional, social and psychological problems in the physical body in the form of sicknesses or accidents. This is a family of builders and makers; its idealism often takes the form of service in military and paramilitary roles in society, such as defense and police work, and it also has a strong affinity for medical and paramedical activity. These and other fields of activity in which Mars excels, like for example sports, require great courage, endurance, discipline, and nerves of steel, which make a virtue of the ability to take distance from sentiment and feeling. They also embody a certain degree of danger and a tendency toward self-sacrifice in the line of duty. What do members of this family come to do in this life? They come to make or build something solid and lasting in physical form, to construct material structures, substantial organizations and tangible products. They come to participate physically in life in such a way as to leave a mark in matter. At the end of each day, and indeed at the end of their lives, members of this family get great satisfaction from being able to point to something solid and three dimensional and say, "This is what I did today," or "This is what I did with my life."

Let's compare that with the List of world chess champions: As per our limited database, three more chess grandmasters have similar Jupiter-Mars Mahabote charts: fivefold world chess champion Vishwanathan Anand and long term grand master Peter Svidler (Jupiter-Mars) and Judith Polgar (if born before sunrise), who is considered the strongest female player of all time (although she never became world chess women champion). Then there is sixfold world chess champion legend Garry Kasparov who has same Saturn-Mars, a combination he shares with Muhammad Ali. Both were highly profiled and original, they have/had strong political stand points which made them famous way beyond their sporting communities. Muhammad Ali even earned the title of the greatest sports athlete of all time. Emanuel Lasker was another sixfold world champion who had a Jupiter-Saturn chart combination. Jupiter stands for reason and objective jugedment, as opposed to lunar intuition and emotion. It also seems to bestow those "nerves of steel" necessary to overcome long and hard battles. Lasker was an exceptional observer (Moon in talent house) and introduced psychology into the chess battle, in that he used to chose not the objectively most promising strategy but the one which served best to undermine the comfort of his opponents. Sixfold champion Anatoly Karpov is Mercury-Venus which indicates a very intelligent mind and also has the competitive planets Sun, Saturn and Mars on the outwardly acting side of the Mahabote chart. Chess idol and superstar Bobby Fischer had a Mars-Mercury combination (same as e.g. Brad Pitt, Friedrich Nietzsche, Mao Zhedong, Christiano Ronaldo), exalted Mars conjunct Ketu and Arudra Lagna (shadow ascendent) and Rahu in 1 which made him an outcast. He was a true athlete with enormeous physical strength, although hardly noticeable in a battle of brains. Fivefold champion Michail Botvinnik has Jupiter-Sun which seems to confirm the importance of a strong Jupiter for deep positional judgement and machine-like objectivity. José Raoul Capablancas Sun-Venus chart seems indicates the importance of a strong self esteem (by a strong sun Sun position), as well as Martian competitiveness and readiness for quarrel (inherent in the Venus matrix). Fourfold champion Alexander Alekhine had Moon-Mars which confirms the Mars factor, but also the innovative and imaginative power of the Moon, as opposed to Jupiter's routinism and Sun's self esteem.

Coincidence: Magnus Carlsen won the 2020 FIDE Wilhelm Steinitz Memorial online blitz chess tournament (May 15-17) with 12 out of 18 and a blitz game Elo performance of 2887.

"Steinitz is the first official world chess champion, and with him a long tradition began that continues to this day. He was also a revolutionary who created a whole new school of chess: 'positional play' was a concept that didn't exist before him. He was also a celebrated author and publicist. ... Probably better than anyone else, Magnus understands that the role of a world champion also brings with it a responsibility. He is always at the forefront of giving chess the role it deserves in our society. It's safe to say that Steinitz would have been proud of him."
- Arkady Dvorkovich, FIDE President

Another Coincidence: Carlsen is using the nick name "DrNykterstein" in the monthly Lichess Bullet Titled Arena. Stein as in Steinitz!

Wilhelm Steinitz (1836-1900) & Magnus Carlsen (1990-) - the kings of positional play

In terms of chess playing style, there is another striking resemblance between Steinitz and Carlsen:

"We're going to study the current world no. 1, Magnus Carlsen. He is, of course, a very complete player, and it's enough to look at his results to see that he's incredible strong. But how does he do it? He's not an opening specialist like Vladimir Kramnik and his preparation doesn't seem too deep, but somehow he always manages to get positions from which he can outplay people. We can't, of course, cover everything in a short training session, but a year ago I had the opportunity to speak to his former coach and a fantastic player, Garry Kasparov, who mentioned Carlsen's incredible positional understanding."

Comparing Kasparov's statement on Carlsens strength to Steinitz' style:

"Back in the 1800s when the world was under the influence of aggressive attacks of Morphy and Anderssen, there rose a man who understood chess more deeply. The general notion was that attacking the king was the only way to win a game of chess and attack in general was considered the best way to play chess. Then came a man who changed the understanding of just about everyone with regards to how chess can be played - Wilhelm Steinitz. It's not like Steinitz grew up with the understanding of subtle positional play. He too loved to attack. However, towards his 40s (somewhere around 1875) he started to understand the deeper essence of the game."

Kramnik commented Carlsens play during C.'s play against Caruana: "Carlsen had his positional feeling right from birth, whereas even the top 10 players didn't develop in that age. I understood that he has the potential to become the next Federer."

The reincarnation matching criteria

One might argue that the similarities of

  1. outer appearance (physiognomy),
  2. personality and character,
  3. field of profession,
  4. public awareness,
  5. horoscope (Mahabote / Jyotish combined), as well as a
  6. typical pause between incarnations of 10 to 100 years

were mere coincidences. But most of these criteria seem match in three more astonishing cases: David Wilcock, Armin Risi and Alma Deutscher. Moreover, each one of these three celebrities had been

  • deeply studying their presumable past life incarnation.

Reincarnation pause:

W. Steinitz / M. Carlsen: 90 years.

E. Cayce / D. Wilcock: 28 years.

F. Hölderlin / A. Risi: 119 years.

N. Mozart / A. Deutscher: 176 years.

David Wilcock (1973-) & Edgar Cayce (1877-1945)

The second striking case of reincarnation is given by the similaries between the personality, faces and lives of "sleeping prophet" Edgar Cayce and New Age philosopher David Wilcock. David incarnated 28 years after Cayce. He studied the life details of Cayce and even recognized several friends and family members of the former incarnation as being also part of his present life. This confirms the old knowledge that souls do incarnate in groups (or classes) and continue their relations and battles. As with Carlsen and Steinitz, the Mahabote charts are again surprisingly similar: Edgar Cayce had Sun-Sun (with Mars in talent house) and David Wilcock has Mars-Venus (with Sun in talent house), as well as Sun/Mars as Atmakaraka and Amatya karaka.

Armin Risi (1962-) & Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843)

In the third case we witness the astonishing similarity of modern age and vedic philosopher and writer Armin Risi and the German poet Friedrich Hölderlin. Armin Risi is one of the profoundest knowers of Hölderlin and has written numerous poems himself. He also has given an interview where he recalls a vision of his past life as the great German poet. Hölderlin had Mahabote Mars-Venus like Mozart,
Armin has Rahu-Moon where Venus and Mars are equally present on the outward side of the chart. Btw: did you note the identical shirt and collar?! And chess sneaks in again - Armin had been a leading Swiss junior chess player back in 1980.

Alma Deutscher (2005) & Nannerl Mozart (1751 - 1829)

Last not least we have English prodigy componist Alma Deutscher as potential reincarnation of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's sister Nannerl Mozart. who is said to had been equally talented as her younger brother. Also here, the outer similarities are striking (especially chin and nose). Nannerl had a Mahabote constellation of Jupiter-Moon. Although Alma's birth date is not fully known (February 2005), it is sufficient for a preliminary chart estimation as it has same Martian seven-year cycle as her then brother Wolfgang A. Mozart who had a Mars-Venus chart. And her Atmakaraka (planet with highest degree) is most likely Jupiter or Saturn, which would - in case of Jupiter - match with her previous incarnation's birth day of week, as well as with her dutyful-teacher-like qualities. Her having Saturn-Mars as Mahabote chart would also match with the chart of former tennis superstar Steffi Graf. Why Alma Deutscher among all the child prodigies? Because she has been attracted "mysteriously" to the life of Nannerl Mozart ever since. She knows everything about her, she lives in Vienna and she's learning German. In her music room hangs a picture of "Nannerl" Mozart. Alma comments, "Unfortunately, she had to take care of the household because she was a girl. Fortunately, I don't have to." Nannerl was also known to play - chess! And Magnus Carlsen is in reverse considered to be the "Mozart of Chess".

In its following incarnation, a souls seems to be mastering with ease the subject they already has been occupied with in the previous incarnation! And the astrological charts of the respective incarnations quite often confirm the outstanding power and will to perform.

These few examples should encourage further (astrological) research. It can be well imagined that also that the former chess rivals of Wilhelm Steinitz have incarnated as current rivals of Magnus Carlsen. They should be recognizeable by some similarity of their physiognomy - watch out!
